The Standard Events
Boomerang contests are played on a 100 meter diameter field. A bulls eye with 5 circles provides the target! You throw from the center. 10 points is a perfect return.
In Accuracy, 10 throws are taken and the high score wins. You let the boomerang come to rest-no catches allowed! In Australian Round, you earn distance points for 30, 40, and 50 meters out. You also get 4 points for a catch! 5 throws make a round. A perfect score is "100". Trick catching tests a variety of catches..one-handed, behind the back...even with the feet! After throwing one boomerang, you switch and throw two at once, catching both in trick catching combinations on return! Maximum Time Aloft tests how long a boomerang stays in the air with a catch in the 100 meters. The world record is over a minute and a half in competition...17 minutes in practice!!! Fast catch tests how fast you can make 5 throws and catches with the same boomerang. Endurance tests how many catches you can make in 5 minutes! The records are 14 seconds in Fast Catch for 5 catches and over 80 catches in Endurance in 5 minutes! Wow! |
The Field of Play
Here is a typical boomerang field layout. The center circles
are for accuracy. The 20 meter line is the minimum distance a boomerang must fly before returning in competition. The 30, 40 and 50 meter lines are for Australian Round and the 50 meter circle also sets the boundary for Maximum Time Aloft. However, all you need to go out and enjoy yourself is an open field! Boomerangs can be as relaxing or challenging as you wish! |
